Bath solutions and moisturizers, mineral oil, and petroleum jelly may help soothe affected skin and reduce the dryness which accompanies the build-up of skin on psoriatic plaques. Medicated creams and ointments applied directly to psoriatic plaques can help reduce inflammation, remove built-up scale, reduce skin turn over, and clear affected skin of plaques. Ointment and creams containing coal tar, dithranol (anthralin), corticosteroids like desoximetasone (Topicort), fluocinonide, vitamin D3 analogues (for example, calcipotriol), and retinoids are routinely used. The use of the Finger tip unit may be helpful in guiding how much topical treatment to use.

Psoriasis that is resistant to topical treatment and phototherapy is treated by medications taken internally by pill or injection (systemic). Patients undergoing systemic treatment are required to have regular blood and liver function tests because of the toxicity of the medication.

Top tips for selecting Herbal Psoriasis Treatments

October 11th, 2011 Brian No comments

If you suffer from psoriasis then chances are you have tried a range of treatments and products designed to offer relief and ease the symptoms. Unfortunately, many of the treatments you try will probably not have a great effect, and may even cause irritating side effects. Herbal treatments may seem a logical idea, as they are less likely to cause side effects than chemical based products; however there are a few things to consider when looking for a herbal psoriasis treatment.

Is it natural?

Over recent years, natural and organic products have become increasingly popular, and there are some manufacturers describing their products as ‘natural’ when there may be very few natural ingredients. Take care to read the ingredients carefully, and check that it is as natural as it claims to be.

Many of the herbal treatments will contain other chemicals as cleaning agents – so don’t be alarmed to see a long ingredients list, however if the ‘natural’ ingredients are looking outnumbered then look into some of the other ingredients to see what might really be the active ingredients.

What are effective herbal ingredients for the treatment of psoriasis?

Herbal, or essential oils and extracts will be used as the active ingredients in herbal psoriasis treatments. There are a whole range of herbs and natural ingredients which have properties beneficial to psoriasis sufferers, some of which are listed below:

Chamomile – Chamomile is a naturally soothing and anti-inflammatory oil, which eases swelling and calms the skin. It can ease puffiness and helps to strengthen the skin tissue, aiding the repair of damaged skin. Chamomile has been found to be soothing oily, dry and irritated skin conditions.

Lavender: Often used as a sleeping-aid, Lavender is another soothing herb. It is an anti-inflammatory and also has a healing effect on skin complaints. It soothes damaged skin, and encourages a quick recovery. Some report that it also helps to prevent scarring.

Rosemary – Rosemary has been used throughout the ages as a rejuvenator for skin and hair, and has been found to help scalp conditions. It is an effective pain relieving agent as well as a powerful astringent, helping to cleanse as well as easing swelling.

Bergamot: Ideally suited for calming inflamed, irritated skin, the refreshing and cooling bergamot oil also has antiseptic properties. This makes ideal for warding off infections and helping damaged skin to heal.

What to avoid?

If you know that you have had allergic reactions to certain ingredients in the past, make sure that none are included in your potential new treatment. Whilst most natural ingredients are hypoallergenic, some people have had allergic reactions to linalool, or you may be allergic to any of the man-made ingredients.

Are there any reviews?

Finding out what other people have to say about a product is always a helpful way to find out the sorts of information which may not forthcoming from the manufacturers direct – for example, how long the product lasts, how much you need to use, and how it smells. Although not all psoriasis sufferers will have the same experiences and reactions to products, its is useful to read how effective it  has been.

Some Reasons To Choose Natural Psoriasis Treatments

September 17th, 2011 Brian No comments

Even though there aren’t established cures for Psoriasis, people suffering from Psoriasis have many treatment options. These range from prescription medications, over the counter products and even natural or home remedies.

Because each person is unique, Psoriasis will likely manifest differently in each person, meaning treatments will work differently for each person. Additionally, every person will have his or her own personal preference regarding treatment. One person may prefer home remedies and another one might prefer prescription medications to treat their Psoriasis.

Why choose natural or home remedies for Psoriasis? Here are five reasons why:

Home remedies are both effective and low cost. In light of today’s economic climate, many people are taking steps to reduce their costs and choose not to spend their money on costly medications. Many people find the idea of using affordable home remedies very appealing.

Being able to avoid spending time and money on doctor visits is another reason that people are choosing home remedies to treat Psoriasis.

The wide range of home remedy options is another big reason. Being able to choose the best natural Psoriasis treatment, doing it from the comfort of your own home, and in your own time is very appealing to many people. Some people are using very simple remedies such as drinking more water or applying lotion after showering with great success. Other people are finding relief with dietary changes, wet wraps, or oatmeal baths.

Most prescriptions drugs produce unwanted side effects and these can sometimes be as painful to deal with as dealing with Psoriasis. Many people choose home remedies because they typically have few or no side affects associated with their use. The idea is to relieve the symptoms of Psoriasis, not start dealing with a host of other issues.

Another big reason for using natural remedies for Psoriasis is that there is nothing to lose. You will be in charge of finding your own relief and creating an effective remedy. There aren’t many things that can go wrong. If a treatment doesn’t work, simply stop using it and try something else.

Natural Psoriasis treatments and home remedies can put you in the driver’s seat in finding relief. These treatments can be cheap, free from side effects, and can be done in your own time from your own home.
